WELCOME TO THE MARINE MICROBIAL ECOLOGY RESEARCH GROUP AT SWANSEA UNIVERSITY
Our lab investigates marine microbiomes associated with photosynthetic hosts (microalgae and seagrasses) and marine plastics to understand how microbial interactions regulate ecosystem health and function. We address fundamental ecological questions about how microbiomes assemble, persist, and respond to environmental change, and how these processes influence primary production, stress tolerance, and pollutant degradation. By combining molecular biology, high-throughput assays, omics, and bioinformatics, we uncover the mechanisms that govern these interactions and their consequences for marine ecosystems. We use this knowledge to design microbe-enabled, nature-based solutions for bioremediation and sustainable marine biotechnology, supporting healthier and more resilient coastal environments.
Our work contributes to the Natural Products BioHUB at Swansea University.
We appreciate the financial support of our work by the European Innovation Council, Innovate UK, BBSRC, EPSRC, Greatest Need Fund and SCoRE Cymru.
